Replace Archos 5 Screen

iRiver is long known for making some of the best and most innovative portable media devices on the market. When it comes to iRiver MP3 players, The Clix is probably one of the best known products from their extensive line of offerings. They have however had a few disappointments over the years, like the simply awful E100. While the E100 was one of the worst iRiver MP3 players ever sold, you will find the New P7 player falls in the middle of the spectrum of good and bad iRiver MP3 players.
The United States versions of these iRiver MP3 players are offered in capacities of 8GB and 16GB which respectively retail between $179.99 and $209.99. The P7’s has a big selling point, and I mean big, a full 4.3-inch touch screen. However that large could stand to be more finger friendly, I found the best thing to do, is use the included stylus. This is not a normal concern with iRiver MP3 players, which are generally known for their easy to use controls. The market, according to iRiver is movie fans, but most of its sales seem to be due to it also being an extremely a capable audio player.
Its unusually large for a flash based device, again not something normal for iRiver-MP3 players, but considering the main audience is movie lovers, understandable. looking more like the Archos series of players which are had drive based, its still a very attractive design. staying in the same vein as other iRiver MP3 players its lightweight, weighing in at 6.2 ounces. The big screen is placed inside a textured silver casing. The sleek design is not marred by the presence of the reset and hold buttons or the slot for the included stylus. On the right side you will find the headphone jack and the internal microphone, a mainstay feature of iRiver MP3 players. The top panel is where to look for the Power, Menu and volume buttons, and on the bottom is the USB connector and the memory card slot, both of which are covered. The only thing about the external components I had a problem with is the fact the USB connector is proprietary, so if anything goes wrong with the included cable you have to not only shell out money for a replacement but have to wait for it to be sent to you from iRiver. But this is not uncommon, and if you have an extra USB cable for other iRiver MP3 players, it should work.
If you are looking for a large screen device consider one of these new iRiver MP3 players as an alternative to the much pricier iPod touch or Archos 5. Granted, you have to use a stylus and remember that there is no WiFi or Web Access, But the offering for format compatibility are impressively good and its wonderful at video playback, even though the screen resolution is less than its competitors its reasonable considering the price difference.
The P7 is one of the best mid-line iRiver MP3 players I have tested and I would have no problems recommending it to someone who wants a good quality large screen device but cant or doesn’t want to go to the higher end models with their premium price points
