is is possible to install software created for linux OS on the Archos PMA400. If so how?
there are lots of linux software available to download, i have an archos pma400, which runs on linux. but have no idea how to install any software
If I’m right, the PMA400 runs Qtopia’s version of Linux . To run any software on it, you need special ‘homebrew’ software for the PMA400 and not just any Linux programs. Archos’ own site has only a few. I suggest you try Mophun and Qtopia games sites and some of the Sharp Zaurus forums and particularly http://kryogenix.org/pma400.
You should find a package manager with the PMA400 which will allow you to install programs. Zarus programs should work without code changes but some configuration changes might be needed. Despite what Archos suggests in the PMA’s manual, you can store executable code in the /media area, which means that the whole 30 Gb is available for Linux apps and their data, if you wish.
Here’s a typical installation:
1. Plug the PMA400 to the computer
2. Download the package at the root of the PMA400 hard drive
3. Safely remove the PMA400 from your computer
4. Check the README file for some specific instructions concerning your package
5. On the PMA, launch the Archos browser (under the Archos tab)
6. Double-click on the package
7. Click install, and make sure the Archos always stays on during the installation process. That’s it!
