Iriver has long been a name of quality for portable media players and the most recent additions to the iriver MP3 players line up are no exception. With a history of dozens of products in this category being released over the years, they have learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t. The most successful name in the pantheon of Iriver MP3 players if the famous Clix which took the world by storm when it debuted a couple of years ago and is still considered by many to one of the leaders among fans. Of course every company is going to have times when they fall a little short of perfection as can be exhibited by the iriver E100 which was, to put it mildly simply awful, even according to iriver.
The most interesting player that I have had a chance to deal with from iriver recently is the P7. This mid-level product offers a wide array of features, if you are willing to put up with a couple of minor irritations which do not affect the quality of the device or its excellent handling of audio and video. The US versions of these iriver MP3 players are readily available at most electronic outlets and retail at a price point between $175 and $225. They are offered in 2 storage capacity styles, an 8GB and a 16GB.
The biggest selling point of the P7 is very big indeed; the device has a huge 4.3 inch full color high quality screen, the first of the irks however has to do with this wonderful screen. The touch interface needs to be more fingers friendly; we found that you have to use the included stylus really to access most of the functions with any type of efficiency. This is a mild disappointment as iriver is generally known for there easy to use controls, and according to company the main issue is the fact that the player is designed primarily for movie fans who would not want their screen marred by fingerprints while trying to watch the latest Hollywood blockbuster.
The device is flash based which at first would take you back due to its large size, but the screen is the name of the game with this player and with such a large screen that a large footprint is obvious. When holding these iriver MP3 players, we were reminded in style, shape, and size of the Archos series of player which are hard drive based, but while weighing in at only 6.2 ounces we were impressed with its lightweight. The big screen is placed inside a textured silver casing. The sleek design is not marred by the presence of the reset and hold buttons or the slot for the included stylus.
While looking for the USB connector we almost overlooked it located on the bottom where it and the expansion card slot are both well hidden under dust cover panels. The only thing about the external components we found to be a minor issue is the fact the USB connector is proprietary. This means that if anything goes wrong with the included cable, you have to not only shell out money for a replacement but have to wait for it to be sent to you from iriver.
